Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and Emerson celebrated the opening of the Energy & Chemicals Training Centre (ECTC), a one-stop training and solution centre to support key process industries.
Located in SP, the centre is expected to train students and current employees from over 30 companies from the energy and chemicals, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors over the next two years, to help close critical skills gaps and harness advanced digital technologies, to boost productivity and optimise resources.
Spanning an area of 1,430 square metres, ECTC houses the Interactive Plant Environment (IPE), a virtualisation room equipped with virtual reality (VR) technologies, a suite of chemical engineering laboratories and key unit operations under one roof. This centre allows students from the diploma in chemical engineering and adult learners from the process industry conduct experiments, build prototypes and operate equipment.
The IPE, an integral part of ECTC, is a space that will simulate real-life industrial manufacturing process conditions with hands-on training on the latest automation technologies in a safe and controlled environment. The IPE is the result of a long-term collaboration between the two organisations to support the growth of Singapore’s industrial workforce.
“This unique facility will equip students and engineers with practical, hands-on training experience, enabling them to develop their skills and be job-ready upon graduation,” said Jamie Froedge, president of Emerson’s automation solutions business in Asia Pacific.
“Not only will this investment help prepare workers to utilise today’s technology, but it will also give them access to cutting-edge innovations that will reshape how work is done in the future.”
The IPE provides a real plant environment with process units for gas absorption, solvent extraction, vacuum distillation and thermal fluid heating. More than 80 Emerson wired and wireless products – including pressure, level, temperature transmitters; flow meters; flame and gas detectors; and control valves – are connected to Emerson’s DeltaV control system and AMS Device Manager, offering trainees the ability to deepen their skills on a full range of the latest automation technologies.
SP has rolled out training programmes that are tailored to align with national and international industry standards, such as accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. These include the SkillsFuture Work-Study Post-Diploma Programme (formerly known as the Earn and Learn Programme) in advanced diploma in chemical engineering, professional conversion programme (PCP) in chemical manufacturing, as well as the full-time diploma in chemical engineering. Through these programmes, SP is currently working with over 10 industry partners, including Chevron Oronite, which has 13 employees under the Work-Study Post-Diploma Programme and PCP.

Singapore Polytechnic is one of more than 350 institutions worldwide, from two-year technical community colleges to four-year university programmes at the undergraduate and graduate levels that Emerson has partnered with to find solutions to address the skills gap in digital automation technologies.
