The rebranded Middle East Energy Awards recognised fifteen organisations and four individuals for outstanding achievements in 16 categories on 18 September at the Play Restaurant & Lounge, The H Dubai, in the presence of a distinguished gathering of upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas industry professionals as well as the senior members of the utilities sector from the region.
The centre of attraction of these awards was the inaugural ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and ‘Innovator of the Year Award’. These awards were bestowed on two veterans serving the regional energy industry for the last four decades with their outstanding industry endeavours, brilliant business acumen, and remarkable domain expertise. Out of the 16 awards, four were personality awards and 12 were organisational awards.
While the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ was presented to HE Saif Humaid Al Falasi, group CEO of ENOC, the ‘Innovator of the Year Award’ was bestowed on Norman L Gilsdorf, president of Honeywell for high growth regions, MERCU. Being Editors’ Choice awards, winners of these two personality awards were adjudged by the editors of Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East, Oil & Gas Middle East, and Utilities Middle East. The distinguished gathering at the awards ceremony endorsed the decision of the editors by overwhelming commendation when these two winners took their trophies on stage.
The two remaining personality awards – promoting the themes of women empowerment and leaders of tomorrow – deserve a special mention here because of the large number of nominations submitted. While ‘Energy Woman of the Year Award’ was bestowed on Nadia Bader Al-Hajji, deputy CEO, projects and business development, Petrochemical Industries Company, Helal Suhail Al Mazrouei, petrochemicals analyst, Mubadala Investment Company, was declared the winner in the ‘Young Energy Professional of the Year Award’ category.
The winning companies in the 12 organisational awards were ACCIONA, ADNOC, ALJ, Al Rawafid, Bee'ah, Brooge Petroleum and Gas Investment Company, Enova, Halliburton, Kuwait National Petroleum Company, Kuwait Oil Company, Marubeni, Masdar, Mubadala Investment Company, SATORP, and Saudi Aramco.
The awards jury panel this year included Abhay Bhargava, director, industrial practice, MEA, Frost & Sullivan; Ali Al Janabi, UAE country chair, VP, Shell Upstream, Shell Group of companies; Bart Cornelissen, energy, resources and industrials leader, Middle East, Deloitte Middle East; Joseph J Anis, president and CEO for GE’s Power Services and Gas Power Systems businesses for the MENASA region; Nicholas Cochrane-Dyet, special advisor to the chief representative, BP Oil International; and, Vinod Raghothamarao, director, energy wide perspectives and strategy, IHS Markit EMEA.
The sponsors of this year’s awards were SATORP (gold sponsor), McDermott (silver sponsor), and ABB (category sponsor).
The most important factors which made the tenth edition of the awards a grand success were the enthusiasm shown by the industry players in nominating the deserving individuals and organisations, detailed analysis done by the judges in deciding the winners and ‘highly commended’, the support of the sponsors, and the active participation of the industry leaders at the awards ceremony.
I take this opportunity to thank the nominators, judges and sponsors, and to congratulate the winners and ‘highly commended’ at the 2019 Middle East energy Awards for making the event a grand success.
I hope the 2020 edition of the Middle East Energy Awards will bring in even more vibrancy to the celebration of performance excellence in the regional energy industry.
