This year, the judging panel for the Oil & Gas Middle East and Refining & Petrochemicals Middle East Awards received a competitive crop of candidates for each of the 10 award categories. Each candidate was scrutinised until the judging panel was able to decide on a shortlist (https://bit.ly/2KUqGOh), and ultimately one winner and one ‘highly commended’ were chosen.

‘Waterflood Monitoring with Surface-to-borehole Electromagnetics’ by Saudi Aramco represented a ‘major step forward’. This enables the mapping of inter-well reservoir. Through the repeated surveying of multiple wells in a given area, the position of the water front can be monitored over time.

Measurements can then be calibrated and integrated with standard production logs. The results provide a means for improved reservoir simulator history matching and optimised reservoir management decisions. With this novel technology, the goal of increasing the recovery factor is one step closer. Saudi Aramco has partnered with Schlumberger to develop and apply the surface-to-borehole electromagnetics technology.

The ‘highly commended’ nomination in this category is ‘TransCoil Rigless Deployed Electric Submersible Pump System’, a joint endeavour by Saudi Aramco and BHGE.

The jury panel this year, comprising five judges – Luciano Poli, president, India, Middle East and North Africa, Dow; Vivek Chandra, CEO and founder, Texas LNG; Nicholas Kjaer, general manager, Middle East, Churchill Drilling Tools; Ben Oudman, regional manager, DNV GL, oil and gas, Continental Europe, Eurasia, Middle East, India and Africa; and Annabel Green, chief technology officer, Tendeka – considered the merit of each and every entry, and decided the winner and the ‘highly commended’.

The 10 award categories were:
1) CSR Initiative of the Year
2) Downstream Project of the Year
3) HSE Initiative of the Year
4) Logistics Service Provider of the Year
5) Oil & Gas Woman of the Year
6) Oilfield Services Company of the Year
7) Operational Excellence Strategy of the Year
8) Technical Innovation of the Year
9) Training Initiative/Programme of the Year
10) Young Oil & Gas Professional of the Year
