Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) will permanently close the heavy oil cracking unit at its Shuaiba refinery, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.

The unit was shut after a fire broke out at the refinery in August resulting in reduced gasoil output by around 50,000 barrels per day, KNPC spokesman Khalid Al-Asousi said.

That would free up more crude for sale by KNPC's parent company Kuwait Petroleum Corp (KPC), he added.

"The H-Oil start-up will not be economical as it will take time and Shuaiba refinery will be closed by April 2017," Al-Asousi said.
